English Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of using journalistic texts on the development of vocabulary and writing skills of English as a foreign language among university students.
Fifty students participated in the study that lasted for one full semester / the summer semester 2010-2011.
Each student enrolled in one of two classes of English 101 course.
One of the classes was assigned to an experimental group of 25 subjects, who were taught using selected journalistic texts, while the other class was assigned to a control group of 25 subjects, who were taught using the current method.
The study aimed at testing the following hypotheses: 1- There is no statistically significant difference at (a=0.05) on the vocabulary test between the experimental and the control groups that can be attributed to the treatment (journalistic or non-journalistic texts).
2- There is no statistically significant difference at (a=0.05) on the writing test between the experimental and the control groups that can be attributed to the treatment (journalistic or non-journalistic texts).
For the purpose of the study, the researcher developed an instructional programme based on using journalistic texts that was taught to the experimental group.
The programme consisted of 7 units; each unit contained different texts (drills and exercises) on both vocabulary and writing.
In order to collect data for the study, he developed two pre-post tests, the first of which was conducted to measure their vocabulary achievement; the second was to measure their writing achievement.
Both tests were administered twice to both groups of the study, once at the beginning of the semester and the second time was at the end of the same semester after applying the experiment.
Validity and reliability of the two tests were established.
Students' responses on the pre-post tests were analyzed using adjusted means, standard deviations and One – Way ANCOVA.
