Abstract EN
This study was carried out on sixty subjects; their ages were above.
40 Years.
Thirty of them were included as control subjects of matched age and sex and the other thirty subjects were included patients (16 males and I4females) with hypertensive thrombotic.
Stroke (assessed clinically and confirmed by C.T.scan) within 72 hours from the onset of the attack.
All patients were admitted to Neurology Dep1998 to May 1999.
Six blood samples were taken from each patient (3samples were taken in the first 5 days and the other 3 samples were taken on the 7th, 9 TH and 11th day of the attack) and one sample was taken from each normal control person.
Determinations of plasma levels of lipid peroxide, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C and vitamin E were done (SOD) Superoxide dismutase andcataalse levels in red blood cells (RBC S) were also measured throughout the studied days.
This study showed that levels of lipid peroxide and nitric acid raised to a very high extent in the first day (4.50+-0.95 umpl/ L, 32.98+- 5.03uml/Respectively), then gradually decreased in days thereafter till They reached levels of 2.54 +- 6.63 umol/L and.
7.83+ n- 6.
15 umol /L respectively on eleven day all levels of lipid peroxide and nitric oxide in various studied day were significantly higher than those in normal persons.
It was observed that the mean value of SOD on the first two- days after the occurrence td stroke was (2.85 + - 1.27and2.82+- 0.
77 ug/ml) compared with control level (3.02+-1.02ug/ml).
This decline was statistically insignificant.
The levels throughout other days didn't show any evident difference.
Also it was observed that all levels of Vitamin C and Vitamin E In various studied days were significantly decreased when compared with the corresponding levels in normal control subjects Significant decreased level in superoxides dismutase and catalase level in RBs (P<0.001) were observed in stroke patients in comparison with control subject we could conclude that antioxidants are depleted as a consequence of an excessive production of oxygen free radicals after cerebral ischemia.
So.
It might be important for patient with s stroke to be treated with antioxidants specially vit C and vit E
