English Abstract

The phenomenon of Globalization has a major impact on the, complexion of higher education sector in the 21st century.

In this context, e- learning mode has emerged as a major higher education option before the global student community in general and the Middle East student population in particular.

Sultanate of Oman is a pioneer in evolving well developed higher education systems in the Middle East, which are on par with the global standards.

Although Oman has well-developed educational systems of higher education, the usage of technology for higher education is limited by less number of users (41.7 % in 2010).

However, the rapid growth of web-based technologies have made teaching and learning via the Internet, or e-learning, more viable in Oman in recent years.

Many universities and Higher Education Institutions(HEIs) have gone online and set up portals to offer e-learning environments either as teaching aids to support conventional teaching approach or as a teaching medium for long-distance or off-campus programs.

Several research studies that were conducted on the Omani higher educational scenario have revealed that, e-learning is gaining importance in Oman on account of the continuous increase in the number of students who qualify for higher education.

Despite this, e-learning is still in an experimental stage in Omani higher education, and is yet to reach the western educational standards.

The present research paper addresses the major challenges that are currently being faced by the modern instructors in the Omani higher educational scenario.

Based on the analysis of the secondary data sources, suggestions are also offered to improve the e-learning systems in Oman.
