English Abstract

Morphometric properties represent a measurement of the Earth’s surface, and processed according to the principles of quantitative analysis through the application of mathematical equations and statistical methods to data from topographic maps and field measurements and satellite and aerial images.

Has introduced statistical methods in engineering analysis, interpretation and description forms the surface of the ground and increased the importance of these methods have become even better in the study as well as from field measurements.

The area of Bulkana (Naft Khana) area located between (34o.00'-34o.20') N and (45o.00' - 45o.35') E at the Iraqi-Iranian border, east of Diyala province of Iraq, it is studied for the first time in this research, using two major tasks: Firstly, a study is present of the morphometric properties of Bulkana.

The study covered an area range between (1072, 1085) km2 of topographic maps and digital elevation model composed of sediments formed from modern and quaternary glacial ages.

Topographic map used to find morphometric parameters in catchment area of Bulkana with scale 1:100000.

The results showed that this area has a circular basin where the circularity (Rc) was found as( 0.87, 0.88).

Drainage density was low according to Strahler classification,(1.7 , 0.92) 1/km and calculated morphometric properties were as follows: elongation ratio (Re) was (0.89, 0.73) and form factor (R.f) was 0.5,Also presented five stream orders, namely (6713, 6755) as 1st, (2481, 3014) as 2nd, (867, 1061) as 3rd, (446, 705) as 4th, and (292, 184) as 5th.

Calculated stream frequency (F) was (10.06, 10.97) river/km2 Bifurcation ratio (Rb) was (2.7,2.3) the Relief was (4.2, 3.6), and hypsometric integral was( 2.3, 2) Results also indicated that first order streams are localized in low zone while other order decreases whenever we move to the north and east of the highest zone.

This was attributed to the slop which gave the raining water a higher amount of energy.

The direction of stream order was agreeable with the slop of surface and break rock, indicating that the catchment area complies with topographic surface.

Secondly, the topographic map of the study area of Bulkana was reconstructed.

This is made by processing data obtained from field work from ground survey by reading 100 point in the (X,Y) North-East coordinates using UTM projection using WGS84 and Z spatially elevation point mean sea level.

Then a comparison was made with data extracted from topographic maps using Grapher software and digital elevation model.

The present error limits on field work were ranging from 2% to 10.3%.

The elevation was measured experimentally for the Bulkana area and error value for elevation was 2.970%, while the maximum error between field work and topographic map was 4.4%.

This indicates that the present results are very accurate and can be used in place of the older maps of this area.

Such maps are provided at the end of the present thesis.
