English Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts obtained from aerial parts of two medicinal plants: Lawsonia inermis and Psidium guajava.

Both broth dilution and disc diffusion methods were used to assess the antibacterial activity of these extracts against several bacterial strains (S.

aureus, E.

coli, K.

pneumoniae, B.

subtilis and M.

luteus).

Antioxidant activity of these extracts was measured in vitro by DPPH and FRAP methods and expressed as Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity.

Both extracts exhibited antibacterial activity in dosedependent manner against the tested bacteria.

MICs were found between 500- 2000 μg /mL for P.

guajava and 250-1000 μg/mL for L.

inermis against the tested bacteria.

E.

coli growth was inhibited only by L.

inermis extract.

Both plant extracts, L.

inermis and P.

guajava, showed relatively high amounts of phenolic compounds (514 and 776 mg GA/g plant extract, respectively).

On other hand, the P.

guajava extract exhibited the best DPPH scavenging capacity and the best ferric reducing antioxidant power (37.5 and 7.93 mg Trolox/g plant extract, respectively).

In conclusion, both plant extracts exhibited antibacterial and antioxidant activities with L.

inermis showing the most antibacterial and P.

guajava showing the most antioxidant capacity.
