English Abstract
Antibacterial and antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts of four plants (Ficus carica , Allium sativum ,Melilotus albus and Pelargonium graveolens) were investigated in this study.
Variations were observed among the examined plants in antibacterial and antioxidant activities as well as in their phenol contents.
The results of antibacterial, antioxidant and total phenol investigations showed that F.
carica exhibited the highest antibacterial and antioxidant activities, and the highest total phenol content followed by P.
graveolens, A.
sativum and M.
albus, respectivly.
The trend for ferric ions reducing activities of the four plant extracts did not vary markedly from their DPPH free radical scavenging activities.
These plants are not only interesting sources for antimicrobial agents but also have a considerable amount of antioxidants.
The study revealed that the antioxidant capacity of these plant extracts could be attributed to their total phenolic content.
