English Abstract

This study aims at investigating the main problems of acquiring and learning English prepositions as well as the main sources of the prepositional problems that Arab learners of English encounter in the use of English preposition.

The methodological process followed in this study was experimental one.

A test was designed to collect data about the problems of acquiring English prepositions by Arabic native speakers.

The sample of the study consisted of 150 twelfth grade students (tawjihi) selected randomly from different schools from southern Al-mazar directorate of education in Jordan.

In the test, the subjects were asked to fill in gaps in twenty English sentences with the suitable English prepositions in order to achieve the purpose of this study.

The findings of research revealed that Arab learners encounter serious difficulties and problems in using the correct English prepositions.

The analysis of these results demonstrated that there were three main problems that students continue to face : (1) substitution, (2) omission, (3) addition.

Moreover, the results showed without any doubt the effect of the subjects first language (Arabic) on acquiring English prepositions.

It is also hoped that this study will provide learners and teachers of English with useful hints, comments and recommendations.
