English Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the readability level of the ninth Grade English textbooks for the ninth grade with regard to the variables of gender and place of residence.

The sample of the study consisted of (93) male and female students who represent the total population of the study.

The researcher used the descriptive method with its survey image.

The formula of Flesch-Kincaid was used to measure the level of readability among the individuals of the study sample.

Frequencies, percentages, arithmetic means, standard deviations as well as two-way Anova analysis of variance were used to analyze the result of the study.

The results of the study showed that the readability level of the ninth grade English textbook was very low (95.7%), these results mean that the readability level was in the frustrational level.

The result also demonstrated that there are differences regarding the variable of gender in favor of the male students, whereas the study result didn't show any differences in the readability attributed to the variable of the place of residence or to the interaction between the variables of the study.

In the light of the study result, the researcher recommended about using the scales of readability for the school textbook in general and for the English Language textbook in particular as well as confirming their compatibility with the level of the targeted students before designing them by using the method of readability measurement.
