English Abstract
Antibacterial and antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts derived from two macrofungi (Terfezia boudieri and Pleurotus ostreatus) were investigated in this study.
Serial dilution and disc diffusion methods were performed to measure the antibacterial activity of these extracts against different bacterial strains (S.
aureus, E.
coli, K.
pneumoniae, B.
subtilis and M.
luteus).
The total phenolic content was assessed by Folin-Ciocalteu method.
The amount of the extract required to scavenge 50% of DPPH radical (IC50) was also measured.
The antioxidant capacity was assessed by both DPPH and FRAP methods.
Both fungal extracts exhibited antibacterial and antioxidant activities which were related to their phenol contents.
The results of antibacterial investigation showed that T.
boudieri exhibited higher antibacterial activity against all tested bacterial strains as compared to P.
ostreatus.
It also showed higher amount of phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant activity.
The trend for ferric ions reducing activities of the of both extracts did not vary markedly from their DPPH free radical scavenging activities.
The findings of this study revealed that the antioxidant capacity of these extracts could be attributed to their total phenolic content.
