English Abstract

preparing a teaching programme on the basis of the principles of the integrative approach, 2.

finding out the effect of using this approach in TEFL on the linguistic achievement of Iraqi intermediate school learners.

It is hypothesized that integration in language teaching will yield better results than the prevailing situation as appears in Book 4 of the New English Course for Iraq.

The principles of the integrative approach have been derived from a theoretical background on the basis of which a teaching programme has been prepared.

The teaching material is limited to units 6-14.

Two intact second intermediate year sections of 56 students were randomly selected to represent the study sample as experimental and control groups.

A nine - week experiment has been carried out by applying the posttest – only equivalent group” design.

Two achievement written and oral tests were constructed and administrated at the end of instruction.

T –test and Pearson coefficient correlation formulas were used throughout the procedures and the analysis of results.

The findings of the study show that the subjects of the experimental group were not better than those of the control group in their linguistic achievement as measured by the posttests.

It is thus concluded that using the integrative approach does not yield better results than using the traditionally used approach at least in the circumstances involved in the application of this approach for this particular study.

The researcher suggests that using the integrative approach requires an integrated course which aims at developing the skills of language integratively.
