English Abstract

The study investigates the universal developmental stages of acquiring negation and interrogation, through following the development of negation and interrogation of Jordanian Arabic speaking children in comparison with the development of negation and interrogation of children speakers of different language.

The results of the current study have significant implications for the universal grammar theory, Chomsky (1965).

The universal grammar theory proposes that children all over the world learn language in similar ways regardless of their culture or the language they learn to speak.

The results of the study show that the subjects of this study passed through stages in their acquisition of negation and interrogation, and these stages are similar to stages that the children passed in previous studies in a different languages.

The similarities in the stages of acquiring negation and interrogation among children from different languages have a strong indication that there is universality among these children in acquiring negation and interrogation in their native language
