English Abstract

The effect of oral administration of ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Matricaria aurea on acute skin inflammation, hematological and serum biochemical parameters were investigated in albino rats.

This study was intended to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced paw oedema.

Rats were divided into two groups, control group and treated group.

The treated rats were orally given 200 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of M.

aurea for 4 weeks.

For antiinflammatory activity test, both groups were injected with 0.1 ml of 1% lambda carrageenan in saline , and the degree of paw oedema was assessed.

The results of the present study showed a non significant (P>0.05) change in RBCs count, hematocrit, WBCs count, differential WBCs count, serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), glucose and uric acid.

Other parameters including albumin, creatinine, AST and total protein were significantly (P<0.05) increased as compared to control rats.

However, hemoglobin and alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly decreased (P<0.05).

On the other hand the ethanolic extract of M.

aurea didn't show inhibition on carrageenan induced rat paw oedema.

It is concluded that chronic treatment with ethanolic extract of M.

aurea induces significant changes in some hematological and biochemical parameters of the rat blood.

In addition, the ethanolic extract of M.

aurea didn't show anti-inflammatory activity in the rat skin.
