English Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts obtained from Cinnamomum cassia, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Salvia officinalis and Senna alexandrina.
Both disc diffusion and broth serial dilution methods were used to assess the antibacterial activity of these extracts against several bacterial strains (S.
aureus, M.
luteus, K.
oxytoca and E.
coli).
Antioxidant activity of these extracts was measured in vitro by DPPH and FRAP methods and expressed as trolox equivalents.
All extracts exhibited antibacterial activity in dose-dependent manner against the tested bacteria.
MICs were found between 0.75 to 3mg /mL for all plant extracts against the tested bacteria.
E.
coli growth was inhibited only by C.
cassia and H.
sabdariffa extracts.
C.
cassia extract showed the highest amount of phenolic compounds (45.2 mg GA/g plant extract) compared to the other plants.
Moreover, C.
cassia extract exhibited the best DPPH scavenging capacity and the best ferric reducing antioxidant power (88.97 and 5.36 mg Trolox/g plant extract, respectively).
In conclusion, both C.
cassia and H.
sabdariffa exhibited a potential antibacterial activities against the tested strains , while C.
cassia and S.
officinalis were the plants that showed the greatest antioxidant activity
