Advanced studies on yeasts isolated from different sources of small ruminants in Fayoum governorate

A survey was done for the most common isolates recovered from different sources from small ruminants either diseased or apparently healthy in fayoum governorate.

The total of tested samples were; 450 (vaginal, rectal, nasal swabs and milk samples).

They consisted of 120 milk sample, 120 rectal swabs, 90 nasal swabs and 120 vaginal swabs, half of them from sheep and the other half obtained from goats.

One third of each type of samples obtained from diseased ones while rest of samples obtained from apparently healthy ones.

The yeast isolates were representative for 6 species Candida albicans (32 isolates), Candida tropicalis (15 isolates), Pichia guilliermondii (4 isolates), Rhodotorula rubra (8 isolates), Geotrichum candidum (32 isolates) and Trichosporon cutaneum (5 isolates) while Aspergillus niger was the sole mold isolated (5 isolates) restricted to nasal swabs only, on the basis of the conventional mycological identification tests, namely; macroscobically, microscopically and biochemically.

The results were confirmed by molecular identification for representative isolates of Candida albicans recovered from different samples of both diseased and apparently healthy small ruminants.
