English Abstract
The increasing number of emerging new infections and antibiotic resistance in microorganisms entailed the search for new sources of bioactive natural products.
Medicinal plants, since ancient times, were considered as a safe and cheep medicinal alternative to treat various ailments.
Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate extract from aerial parts of Achillea fragrantissima were investigated.
The crude extract was subjected to different types of column chromatography (Silica gel and Sephadex LH-20) and purified compounds were isolated using TLC chromatography.
The resulting fractions and compounds were assessed for their antibacterial activity in agar diffusion test and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), as well as its antioxidant by DPPH assay.
Extract of A.
fragrantissima revealed antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, namely, Bacillus subtilis.
The 1.5 mg/ml crude extract caused an inhibition zone of 13.0 mm to B.
subtilis with MIC of (400 μg/ml) for purified compounds .
The antioxidant activity of tested extract and purified fractions IC50 ranged from (11.87 to 52.59 μg/ml) and TEAC of (1.320 – 6.525 μg Trolox / μg plant extract).
The phytochemical screening indicate that purified compounds belong to aromatic hydrocarbons chemical groups.
Therefore, A.
fragrantissima represents a good candidate for isolation of antimicrobial compounds and antioxidant agents with pharmaceutical .
