English Abstract
The present study tackles the Arabic-into-English translation of verbal irony from a descriptive-analytical point of view.
It tries to investigate the translatability of verbal irony, identify the adopted strategies in rendering irony from Arabic into English, and the translator's efficiency in conveying the intended message to the target text.
To accomplish this, two English translations of Nguib Mahfouz' novel Midaq Alley are studied and analyzed, the instances of verbal irony in both translations are identified and classified, then a comparison between them is conducted in terms of equivalence to the source text.
The thesis comes to the conclusion that translating verbal irony from Arabic into English is amenable using literal translation, which is the most used strategy, especially when the translator is aware of the cross- cultural and cross-linguistic discrepancies in both languages
