four conversational maxims: quality, quantity, relevance and manner.
Grice (1975:24) suggests these maxims of conversation, and argues that people should, to a certain degree, obey them so as to achieve a successful communication.
In reality, participants of a speech act are likely to flout the maxims without misunderstanding what they communicate.
There are reasons behind flouting the maxims, and these reasons could be mostly behind the generation of what Grice (1975:27) calls implicature.
In the light of Grice's cooperative principle, the present study focuses on how the characters in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist resort to flouting and violating the four maxims, analyzes the characters of the novel in a descriptive way, and examines to what extent they could achieve compliance and fulfillment or non–compliance and non-fulfillment of these maxims.
The study also identifies whether the characters flout the maxims consciously or unconsciously, and illustrates the implicature behind flouting the maxims, which is hoped to help give a better chance to reveal all ambiguous instances as well as build up a better awareness of the novel.
The study also aims at recognizing the most flouted maxims and the reasons for resorting to flouting and violation.
Among the conclusions reached in this study is that all maxims are flouted and violated by the novel's characters.
Nevertheless, the main maxim flouted by the characters of The Alchemist is the maxim of quality
