Abstract EN

“Lexicography” is one of the most important and accurate fields within Applied Linguistics, considering the core importance of thedictionary and its double value (Scientific- Educational),which enhances itsrole in human life.

Lexicography, as an area of study, has always attracted the attention of many Arab scholars and linguists through linguistic messages that represented the first foundations of different types of dictionaries (semantic, alphabetic, structural…etc).Furthermore, the modern linguistic and educational theorieshad, considerably, accelerated the development of lexicographywithout neglecting the basic principlesof this discipline.

This leads to compile dictionaries that meet the different needs of the public, such as historical dictionaries, encyclopedic dictionaries, specialized lexicon and especially school dictionaries…etc.

After World War II, authoring movement in school dictionarieshas become very active, thanks tothe spread ofeducation, and the extreme need of such educational means toenhance the role of the teacher and school book, and to help the learner improve and develop his/her capacities.

Thus, this paper comes to tackle the school lexicon as a means of teaching that enables to form the teachersand enrich theirlanguage and cultureNOur objective is to show how entries are chosen and ordered (arranged) within a dictionary, then how to define them, as two main steps of lexicographical authoring, in a sample of dictionaries, widely used by learners.
