Abstract EN

The present paper handles the problem of translating implicit meanings in audiovisual translation.

It tries to unravel some of the mysteries related to this phenomenon such as: the way implicit meanings are included within films and TV programs, the importance of translating them, the methods adopted by subtitlers in order to render them into the target language, taking into account both the linguistic and the technical considerations.

The main insights of the paper are to be applied on “Les Midérables” subtitled in Arabic.

As this movie is adapted from a novel into a musical, great number of meanings and insinuations are strictly related to the image, intonations, gestures,…The main finding of the study is the use of “explicitation”, i.e.

explaining and showing the hidden meanings in the target language.
