Abstract EN
This paper aims at answering the following questions: what is the importance of translation history for translators, translation students, and for all those who are interested in translation? Can a good knowledge of history add something to our understanding of translation and improve our practice? The answer to these questions may seem unproblematic but it is not: Our teaching experience tells us that there is a kind of disparagement (consciously or unconsciously) of history and all the theoretical courses, considered as secondary in translation teaching and training.
Thus, we will try to show how a good knowledge of translation history can contribute in producing a good translator, i.e.
a translator who is aware of the historical role translation has always played, and has enough knowledge of the various traditions in the different cultures.
This awareness provides the translator with a wide range of possibilities and at the same time gives them the intellectual flexibility to explore them without reproducing them in a servile way
