English Abstract

Study Importance: Construction industry is one of the main pillars that the Palestinian economy lean on and the most active tool for societies to grow and develop.

Study Aim: The aim of the study is to identify the main internal and external challenges that small-sized construction firms are wrestling in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to that, to review briefly small-sized construction firms definition, characteristics, stages of survival and growth, source of funding and importance to economy.

And finally to highlight a set of recommendations that may help in improving small-sized construction firms situation.

Methods: The study was mainly carried out by the distributing questionnaires to the small-sized construction firms representatives in the Gaza Strip.

Study Results: The research concluded a summary of the most affecting small-sized construction firms challenges that are: start-up cost, foreign currency fluctuation, access to finance during the execution of work, continuous abruption of construction material, high and unstable prices of construction material, nomination and recruitment policies for the team, policies to maintain staff stability, the lack of clarity of vision and the difficulty of developing a strategic plan far away, the need for a permanent marketing system and skills, the involvement of the owner in the details of the execution of the work, the complexities of dealing with suppliers, the general economic situation, the competitive nature of construction and contracting and finally the corruption in some governmental and private institutions.

Study Recommendations: The research finally reviled a list of recommendations for decision makers that focused on mitigation of financial loads and protection against unequal competition for small contractors.

In addition to a group motivational measures to improve the opportunities of the small contractors to survive and grow.
