Physiological effect of carmoisine (synthetic food colouring additive)‎ on albino rats

In this study, long term toxicity of carmoisine on rats was investigated.

80 rats of 30 days age were used.

There were divided into 4 groups.

The first one was left without treatment and considered as a control group, while the other 3 groups were given carmoisine in doses 250, 500 and 1000 mg / kg diet, respectively for 2 months.

There was no adverse effect on mortality but emaciation and reduction in thyroid hormone at the higher dose.

Biochemical analysis revealed significant increase in enzymatic levels, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine and uric acid.

Changes were recorded for total protein, albumin and A : G ratio.

It is concluded that the harm dose was found to be 250 mg/kg diet as it causes hepatocellular damage and renal failure.
