English Abstract
The activities of methanolic (MeOH) extracts of four plants : Achillea fragrantissima (forssk) (A.
fragrantissima), Teucrium polium L.
(T.
polium), Rosmarinus officinalis and Alhgi graecorum were investigated in this study, as antibacterial and antioxidant.
The effect of methanolic plant extracts was tested against five bacterial isolates: Escherichia coli (E.
coli ATCC 25922), Staphylococcus aureus (S.
aureus ATCC 25923), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.
aeruginosa ATCC 27853), Proteus mirabills ATCC 426 and Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 29004.
The plant extracts have different effects on these bacterial strains.
The inhibition zones of these plant extracts ranged from 0-25mm.
The antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria was noticed with the four plants extract.
However, the effect on gram positive was also noticed with the Rosmarinus officinalis plant at lower concentration(10mg / ml).
The activity increases as the concentrations of plant extracts increase.
The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for MeOH plant extracts was found between 1.2-3 mg / ml for A.
fragrantissima, 1.2- 1.8 mg / ml for Alhgi graecorum, 1.2-2.6 for T.
polium and 1.2-1.7 for Rosmarinus officinalis against all bacterial strains.
A highest antioxidant activity was obtained with extract of Rosmarinus officinalis (97.9% inhibition of ABTS•+) and the lowest antioxidant was obtained with Alhgi graecorum (38.9 % inhibition of ABTS•+).
The IC50 for the four plants used ranged from 20.8µg / ml for Rosmarinus officinalis and 103.04µg / ml for A.
fragrantissima.
The trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity of R.
officinalis, A.
fragrantissima, T.
polium and A.
graecorum was found 0.424, 0.192, 0.174, 0.172 µM/µg dry matter respectively.
The IC50 in trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity for these plants was 0.53 µM / µg for R.
officinalis, 0.011 µM / µg for A.
fragrantissima, 0.158 µM / µg for T.
polium and 0.165µM / µg for A.
graecorum..
