Abstract EN

Due to the significant increase in the price, fish meal (FM) is always exposed to adulteration.

From the materials that can be used for adulteration of FM is the feather meal (FeM) due to high protein contents and relatively low price.

In the present study, we evaluated the FT-IR-ATR technique for detection of FM adulteration with FeM.

Different concentrations of FeM and FM were scanned using FT-IR at 4000 cm-1 to 400 cm-1.

Two prominent peaks was determined to differentiate between FM and FeM, one at 1742 cm-1 related to C=O that found in triglycerides and the other at 3012 cm-1 related to – CH=CH that found in unsaturated fatty acids.

The correlation between FM concentrations and absorbance at 1742 cm-1 and 3012 cm-1 was well described as straight line Gas chromatography showed that FM is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to FeM.

It could be concluded that both FT-IR is considerable tool for detection of FM adulteration with FeM.
